What to Expect

Welcome to Well Body Bowen!

Before we begin our work together, please read this information about how Bowen works.

Understanding Bowen

The Bowen technique is a gentle and relaxing treatment that addresses soft and connective tissue in the body. Bowen stimulates the body to engage its own healing and recovery mechanisms and allows the body to heal itself.

How It Works—Bowen uses specific procedures to treat different presenting conditions. The practitioner applies subtle input or pressure, called “moves,” to predetermined points in the connective tissue. The practitioner then leaves the room and after a short pause returns to apply the next move. The pause between moves allows the body to begin processing the information of the move. Depending on the procedure, you may experience a dozen or more of these sequences of moves and pauses in a single session.

More on Moves—The moves deliver signals to the nervous system and stimulate the body to heal itself. The practitioner applies moves at precise locations on the body and in precise sequences and timing intervals. Generally the input is light and minimal, as the goal is to communicate with the nervous system not to manipulate it. Your treatment will include a set of primary basic moves and a set of specific rolling moves across the fascia or soft tissue. The moves address points in the fascia associated with particular muscle groups, tendons, ligaments, or nerves.

The First Session—The first session is usually a general balancing of the body. Clients often report deep relaxation in the first session and then more dramatic progress after subsequent treatments. However, it does depend on the person—some clients report dramatic results after only one treatment.

For acute pain we can use a specific procedure in the first session in addition to the general balancing.

How You Can Help

Bowen is different than other types of treatment in significant ways and might be unlike anything else you’ve tried. The most important things you can do before, during, and after your treatment are to keep an open mind and trust your body to heal itself.

Here are a few more things you can do to optimize your treatment:

Before the Treatment

During the Treatment

  • Relax and adopt a receptive attitude.
  • Be aware of subtle or obvious changes in your body that signal to you that change and healing are taking place.

After the Treatment

  • Follow specific after-care recommended by your practitioner.
  • Trust the process
  • On the day of the treatment:
  • Don’t sit for more than 30 minutes at a time.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Avoid ice packs, heating pads, and hot tubs and showers.
  • Walk 15-20 minutes a day.
  • Drink plenty of water. (This is really important)
  • Avoid other treatment modalities, including massage, acupuncture, etc., for at least five days after Bowen treatment.
  • Be aware of subtle or obvious changes in your body that signal to you that change and healing are taking place.
